Five years ago, Destin Sandlin of the YouTube channel SmarterEveryDay saw a video of two vortex rings colliding with each other. As he watched, something caught his attention: a group of tiny rings appeared in the collision's wake.

Sandlin spent years trying to recreate that phenomenon. Along with his collaborator David Linderman, he worked to capture a similar collision in high resolution. After roughly four years of work, they pulled off the reaction. And on Wednesday, they finally published high-res, slow motion video of their work.
