A modern take on the Razor models of your childhood, herds of dockless electric scooters took sidewalks by storm last fall as a hip, eco-friendly alternative to public transportation. By allowing riders to pick up and drop off their e-scooters wherever, companies like Bird and Lime made it easy to zip around a city on the cheap. 

But because people are people, some of these e-scooters met fateful ends at the bottom of lakes, in grocery store aisles, and on deserted beaches.
