The 2000s are bookended by cell phones. The first BlackBerry was released in 1999, giving Hollywood’s self-important businessmen and ladies an instant shorthand for being Very Busy with Lots of Emails; in 2010, the iPhone 4’s slim, futuristic form factor had folks lining up around city blocks for Apple’s all-conquering third-gen handset. In between those mobile milestones was a decade where mainstream pop culture reckoned with the slow death of the phone call at the hands thumbs of text messaging, and battled hilariously with the aesthetics of SMS.
