Ideally, laptops should be easily portable — otherwise, you'd spring for a desktop computer. Ideally, they have a good enough processor to power you through everyday tasks (and maybe even some more). And ideally, this wouldn't cost a ton.
Trying to satisfy all three of these requirements in one laptop can feel like an exercise in making concessions. But as of Nov. 17, the Acer Swift 5 is on sale for just $999 at Amazon, proving that you can have the powered-up portable machine you want without breaking the bank (thank you, Black Friday sales).
You'd think that a 14-inch touchscreen laptop with long battery life might be a bit heavier, but this bad boy clocks in at just 2.31 pounds. For reference, that's about half a pound lighter than a 13-inch MacBook Air. Don't let its weight fool you — the Swift 5 still packs a punch, with an 11th Generation Intel Core i7 processor, 16GB of memory, and 1TB of storage space. Plus with Iris Xe graphics, it can function as a pretty decent gaming machine.
Despite its slim size, the Swift 5 can still keep you well-connected (in terms of ports, at least) with two USB Type-A ports, one USB-C port, a headphone jack, and a full-size HDMI 2.0 port. As non-port related connections, this laptop also comes with WiFi 6 and Bluetooth 5.1.
All of this isn't to say that this laptop is without shortcomings. According to reviewers, the built-in speakers aren't anything to write home about (or if you are, it isn't a glowing letter). In terms of visuals, the display maxes out at 1920 x 1080 pixels, so don't expect 4K resolution. And as with most laptops, the webcam leaves something to be desired, so if you're on Zoom calls 24/7, you'll likely want to spring for something external.
Overall, if you're looking for a laptop that prioritizes function and portability, the Acer Swift 5 could very well be the way to go — grab it on Amazon while it's on sale for a limited time only.
